Deeper into the Rede

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

Wicca is a religion that recognizes the laws of nature and the universe as an integral part of life. Besides these natural laws, there are few written tenants that transcend the divide between tradition-defined and eclectic Wicca. Most use the Wiccan Rede, for guidance, and interpret these writings with their personal understanding and experience. Others may belong to a tradition or coven that defines a certain ethical or moral code.

At The Firefly Academy, we teach for eclectic practitioners that may either desire to be solitary or to work with a group. With this considered, each person defines their own exact ethical code by which to live, however guided by the understanding of the Wiccan Rede and other writings. I must mention that I was taught by a coven, yet I do not follow or teach the ways of any specific tradition. You may find that this lecture is tainted with my own beliefs and practices. On that note, this lecture will be written from my own interpretation, and I ask that you keep this in mind.

Aleister Crowley was an infamous mystic, who lived in the early 20th century. We should note methods were questionable, but his writings had an impact upon Gerald Gardner and his group. Personally, I feel that Crowley was a mixture of crazy and brilliance, and that comes out in almost everything that he did. In LIBER AL vel LEGIS, Crowley scribed, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.” These words heavily influenced:

The Wiccan Rede: “And ye harm none, do what thou wilt.”

When we discuss the Wiccan Rede, we enter a discussion of morals, ethics, and values. Though very short and seemingly simple, it has left for many interpretations of what exactly it means. Harm none, do what you will. There are many questions we can ask. Our human existence makes it complicated. What is considered harming? What is included when we say “none”? What if we did not intend to harm? Does that mean we can do ANYTHING as long as we are not harming anything? What happens if we do harm something? Who keeps track of all of this?

Not specifically written, this guideline indicates that Wicca is a self-policing religion. It is maintained that we must be aware of what we do, think, and feel, as well as take responsibility for our positive and negative actions. The most effective way of understanding and putting this law into effect in our lives is awareness. We need to become aware of how we effect the world around us, as well as think through the effects of our actions before we carry them out.

Harm is anything that has a negative effect on someone or something. This includes physical injury, as well as moral injury (i.e. manipulation, domination, emotional harm, etc.). Harm occurs in many degrees, and is closely coupled with intent. In the scheme of this, most would agree that a “little white lie” holds less weight than murder. Also, Intending and planning to murder is much worse moral offense than killing in defense.

Harm can be caused directly to something as well as indirectly to something. In Bee Movie, the main character sues humans to get back all of the honey that humans stole from bees. The bees ended up with so much honey that they became lazy, and no longer worked with the flowers. The result was that the flowers did not get pollinated and all died. Indirectly, this one little bee caused the flowers to die. In the end, he took responsibility for his actions, and set everything right. That is definitely a big lesson in thinking our actions through first.

Though “none” indicates zero, nothing, nobody, it includes most everything. As a result of our lectures sessions, we have discussed that an existence without harm is not possible. With that in mind, we can begin to divide harm into several categories. There are harms that are intentional, unintentional, and part of the natural process of survival and balance. Obviously, this means not to harm other people. Something unspoken, yet recognized, is to not harm yourself. Do not abuse yourself, allow yourself to be healthy and happy. Do not harm the planet. Do not harm the universe. Care for the things in which life energy resonates, such as animals, rocks, and trees.

Of course, this creates some form of contradiction just by typing it. Somehow, the energy that powers my home and internet, the plastic and electronics that make up my computer, as well as the cement from the building that I live in, and the waste that I produce all have some form of indirect harm on the planet. By driving my car, I cause small harm to the earth. Though we are from many different countries and cities, I will assume that your society is somewhat like mine. We are apart of these societies, because it would be nearly impossible for us to function otherwise. It is possible for some people to live a life that does not harm the earth, but not for all of us. It is important to be aware of how the way we live impacts the earth, and strive to make a small imprint. I am afraid that none of us can escape the harm we cause as a society and global community, no matter what kind of life we live. We can only seek to lessen the degree to which it occurs, or to take with reverence, and give back to the earth.

In The Spiral Dance, Starhawk wrote, “While the Craft recognizes that life feeds on life and that we must kill in order to survive, life is never taken needlessly, never squandered or wasted. Serving the life forces means working to preserve the diversity of natural life, to prevent the poisoning of the environment and the destruction of the species.”

When it comes to the self, we can overlook a lot of harm that we cause. Our spiritual experience is affected by our physical state. The amount of physical activity that we participate in, the state of our nutrition, the amounts that we take in various substances (alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and other drugs) can all have a negative effect on our lives. However, by figuring out what we need more of, what we need less of, and what we should rule out all together, we can better take care of ourselves, and be more effective in the spiritual realm. In Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, Scott Cunningham stated, “It also ensures that you’ll be in good condition to take on the tasks of preserving and bettering our world, for concern and love for our planet play major roles in Wicca.”

Yes, “harm none, do what you will” says that we can do ANYTHING as long as we are aware of our actions, think them through, and be willing and ready to accept the consequences or give back if necessary.

When harm is done, a common tenant couple with the Wiccan Rede is the Threefold Law. Similar to the eastern philosophy of karma, this concept is based on cause and effect. To sum it up, that which you put out into the universe comes back you to times three. This applies to positive, negative, and everything that falls in between. We live in a place were death often brings new life, where the tides come and go, and where we all experience ups and downs. What we put out comes back. A popular phrase says, “Do unto other others as you would have others do unto you.”

There are times when NOT acting is harming, even with the best intentions. A commonly-cited scenario, which just popped up in one of our Mystical Forest discussions, is a shooter coming into an establishment, and a person who could have stopped the shooter fails to act. This one person did not stop the shooter, because he or she felt it wrong to harm someone else, even under the circumstances. But, the shooter went on to kill 10 people, even though it could have been prevented. In that situation, not harming caused a greater harm. The tenants and writings that we look at are merely guidelines. They cannot apply in all situations. You are responsible for being aware of when to act and when not to act, as well as what the outcome will be. Just as if you get pulled over for speeding, ignorance of the situation is not a defense, and will not get you out of a ticket.

“Every man and every woman is a star.” In my copy of The Book of the Law, the introduction says that each person is, “an aggregate of…experiences, constantly changing with every fresh event, which affects him or her subconsciously or consciously.” And that the object that you see is never the same one that I see. This indicates that we all have unique experiences, and events impress upon us differently, creating us each our own universe. The way we look out upon the physical world is through these experiences, or a window of events, and our morals and ethics will be affected by this.

I feel that “The Book of the Law” is worth reading: http://www.sacred-texts.com/oto/engccxx.htm

The Ardanes, “Old Laws”, or the 161 Laws, were introduced by Gerald Gardner, and the original document was suspected to have been created by Gardner himself. Some of these laws are controversial, and others unnecessary. I had not encountered them until doing further research on the Wiccan Law. A discussion has developed on this topic in the forum: http://firefly.mrooms.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=137

*NOTE: This lecture was originally written as the Wiccan Law. Throughout my years of training and study, I was taught that the Wiccan Law is “And ye harm none, do what thou wilt” and that the Wiccan Rede was the longer prose version. I never gave it a second thought. However, through our discussion on this lecture, it was brought to my attention that a law is a law, which provides for little exceptions, and that a rede is a guide. I agree with this statement, so I have adapted this lecture to reflect.

Questions:
1. What are your thoughts?
2. How do you interpret the Rede? Similar or different from my point of view?
3. Do you disagree or agree with any of the above parts? Why or why not?I

The Dangers of Witchcraft

Monday, January 21st, 2008

While Wicca teaches the use of magick to enact a positive change, there are still dangers to beware. If you google “dangers of witchcraft”, you will be bombarded with materials written by non-practicing individuals with a religiously conservative message. Some of them even cite Harry Potter as some sort of example or proof of their claims. While spouting off devil danger might be very real to them, for those who practice the Craft, we have different concerns.

Continuous practice may lead to the realization of some of these items. Others are common sense. Some you may never have to deal with. In a discussion in the Mystical Forest, an advanced forum for students who have completed Wicca 2, we took up this topic for discussion. I present you some of the dangers that we discussed. There are 21 of them, so I will post them one at a time. While exploring these items, be thinking about their relevance, experiences you have personally had with them, as well as what you have witnessed with other people, why some of these issues arise, and how to deal with them when they do. We will begin in just a moment.

1. In some countries or cultures, there are social ramifications for practicing witchcraft. While in many countries, residents can go about their religion and personal practice as they see fit, others are not so fortunate. More than a few students have commented that they are practicing in secret, that they are taking online classes, because if exposed in their town, it could provoke an unwanted response. To others, their family and friends may have adverse reactions to the truth.

2. Many aspects of witchcraft are too complicated for children and possibly younger teens to deal with. The Craft takes will power, emotional, physical, and mental stability, as well as maturity. While we would give a young person a gun that shoots bubbles, we would not give them a gun that shoots bullets.

3. Fad experimentation could lead to one accidentally stumbling into risky situations. When some people choose to rebel against social norms, witchcraft can be appealing. When I was in high school, I hung with a group of social rebels. When I decided to study Wicca, the whole group did, too. Some of us took up serious study, and others experimented with topics beyond their ability. I have also encountered several people who study a bit here and there with great personal gains in mind. Those who practice the Craft based on their desperation to complete a task, such as to cast spells to force an ex-lover to come back. Some look for power, and may even seek to mimic tales of witches, wizards, and warlocks, and supernatural adventures. Getting oneself into complicated situations is always way easier than getting out of them.

4. Working in the realm of the Spirit, with spirits and other entities, as well as with energy can increase the spirit activity around a person, or one’s awareness of spirit activity. Once a door is opened, it is difficult to close it, and some people may be spooked or uncomfortable with these types of experiences.

5. If one does not know how to properly ground, or has difficulty grounding, this could result in an “energy hangover”, in which an excess of energy causes headaches, body aches, and other similar symptoms. Some practitioners can become addicted to the “energy buzz” of working with magick.

6. Difficulty around electronic equipment. For example, common is the static shock from clothes and skin becoming eclectically charged.

7. Some new or increased allergies or sensitivities may occur. These are not to be confused with normal sensitivities that occur as a person’s body changes with age. For example, with age, I have become mildly sensitive to some detergents, cilantro, and lactose. However, once I began to practice witchcraft, I developed sensitivity to most metal that I attribute to my involvement in the Craft. If it is not sterling silver or platinum, I have trouble keeping earring in my ears or rings on my fingers without swelling.

8. An wave of unexpected depression that can come every now and then.

9. Elemental issues. I have a tendency to get burned when I am angry. Also, when I am not grounded, I trip on everything. Everything. I lose the ability to automatically sense the distance between objects.

10. There are several physical hazards to be wary of during ritual. One could become disoriented during trance work/aspecting, knocking over lit candles, tripping on things, or cutting oneself.

11. Traveling on such a path can cause physical/mental illnesses to crop up or come back. The spiritual experience requires a great stability in all facets of life. It is best to make sure that one is stable in their mental, physical, and emotional selves before continuing on one’s path, even in practicing witchcraft.

12. Drug abuse can result if a person cannot cope with such a drastic fluctuation in energy, and then this translates to an instability that is pacified with a psychotropic substance.

13. The high energy and personal closeness of a coven can become a sexual concern. For example, a person may develop an attraction to another in the circle because of the sensual, attractive power of magick, even if the individual is in a committed relationship outside.

14. One can stumble in to financial stress as a result of a tool addiction. Folks who become obsessed with obtaining tools, books, memberships, and classes may put themselves into financial trouble trying to acquire these things. The Craft requires no tools to practice, and there are always alternatives for each person to fit practice into their own lifestyle. I have seen people get carried away.

15. The after shock of initiation (or even dedication in some cases) can be overwhelming.

16. One concern for some people is an addiction to divination, or an over-reliance on divination to make life choices. While divination is a form of communication with the divine, it can only guide our choices. It cannot make the choices for us. I have had a couple of people write to me with concerns about divination experiences. One lady kept visiting self-proclaimed psychics, who would do readings for her, and tell her that she could have what she wanted if she paid several hundred dollars for spells and potions. She never paid them, but she always took their word on her fate, and made major life decisions based on it. I have stopped astrologically over-analyzing the men that I date. It’s sort of weird when a girl asks a guy in what city and what time he was born on the first date. After a couple of times, I realized I was a little over-reliant.

17. Over-reliance on spell work for even the most mundane tasks.

18. Paranoia, or the fear that one is being hexed or cursed, when there are no signs.

19. An over-reliance on coven mates. Since, covens are essentially family, some people can take took many liberties. One of our coven mates leaned on the group for help doing many tasks. One of my last encounters with this person was when our whole coven and our actual family members came over to help him move out in 2 days. We were told everything would be packed and a dolly built, but nothing was done, and our friend was sleeping when we arrived, and it took us awhile to wake him. Needless to say, we not only moved him, but packed him, and cleaned the place, too.

20. People change. One of the fundamental goals on this path is a deeper personal exploration and understanding.

21. Increase in an underlying empathic ability. For some people, the ability to sense the moods and feelings of other living things can open up to the point of suffocation before they get it under control.

Expressing Creativity

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Pursuing activities that require you to be creative can enrich your connection to the divine. Let me explain the thought process behind this. Your mind consists of three different parts: the Talking Self, the Younger Self, and the Divine Self. The Talking Self is your consciousness or the part of you that is awake and thinking all of the time when you are not sleeping. The Younger Self is also called the Dream Self or the unconscious. It is that part of you that takes over when your Talking Self has gone to sleep. It is called the “Young Self,” because children are often very present in their creative and dream awareness. The Divine Self is the part of you that is directly connected to the creative life-force of the universe, or those vibrating string-things.

These three parts of your conscious communicate linearly. In other words, they can only directly communicate in the order which they exist:

Talking Self – Young Self – Divine Self

The Talking Self can only communicate directly with the Young Self, the Divine Self can only communicate the directly with the Young Self, and the Young Self can communicate directly with both the Talking Self and the Divine Self.

Let us focus on this Young Self. It is the creative self, the dream self. It is called this because children have an innocent wonder, exploring the world, and seeking knowledge. They spend time doing creative things, such as crafts, coloring, and playing. This is the time when they build their imaginations, fantasize about lands far away, and try to make those dreams a reality by playing with toys and dolls.

When we engage in creative activities, most of the time, the talking part of our brain stops talking, and allows the creative part to do its thing. By enriching our creative selves, we can better receive influence from the divine. Some of the creative projects that I pursue are writing, editing video, scrapbooking, painting, and crafting magickal tools. There are hundreds of ways to tap into your creativity and get those juices flowing.

My Story of Not-So Perfect Love and Perfect Trust

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Perfect love and perfect trust is rough Wiccan principle. We are free to associate with who we wish. However, those we practice with must be completely trustworthy. You wouldn’t let a liar, a thief, or someone who was going to take advantage of others into your house. Well, if they are related to you, that’s a different situation. But, if you could choose your family, in other words, when you choose your coven…you would not let liars, thieves, and others of a surly nature into your family. Perfect love and perfect trust means that we give our hearts to those in our circle, because they are good people. Because they give their hearts to us. We are good people.

Last year…the coven Saria, Bridget, and I founded…the Coven of the Spiral Moon. There were four of us at first. As I mentioned earlier, my circle sisters are like family. When family turns on you, it can be the hardest to deal with. This is a story of perfect love and perfect trust.

I have update a profile on Myspace-DOT-com for 2 and a half years. I don’t meet people in person from there. It’s a tool to keep up with all of the college and high school friends that I had left behind. But I did meet a young woman there…I will call her Jane…to whom I felt a strong connection. When I meet women, I can feel it. I just knew that this woman was going to be a great friend. The more we chatted, the more it became evident that she was a mini-me. Jane was just like me when I was her age.

I was taken aback when I saw a picture of a guy on her profile, one that she had apparently been hanging out with. This guy was my ex-boyfriend…who broke up with me on Valentine’s Day…our anniversary…and could not give me a reason. I asked him not to hang out with her. How could her and I be great friends if she was dating this guy that so savagely broke my heart? I couldn’t. But they never dated. So, she joined our circle last summer.

The four of us did a crash course in Wicca…reviewing basics, introducing new topics, and getting the three ladies up to speed. Jane had to studied with me for the years Saria and Bridget had. We got together for ritual on full moons and sabbats. We did witchy crafts and went shopping. Our connection deepened as the months went on. I was very right about her. Jane and I were such good friends. She was family.

I deduced sometime later that Jane and my ex-boyfriend were dating. I was crushed. It took me weeks before I could look her in the face. But, I could understand. She lied to me, because she knew I wouldn’t be her friend. She felt the strong pull to me as well, and took the risk to be my friend. I pressed both of them to know how long they had been dating. It took me a little while to get over him, because he could not tell me any reason for the break-up. He still found me very attractive, smart, and funny. We had a blast at concerts, I didn’t have a social or personality issue. Nothing. Whatever. He was just a jerk. But I had a great friend out of it: JANE.

Months later, we were meeting every week for our witchy studies. Saria, who worked overnight, had shown up early that morning and crashed on my couch. Jane called at 10am and said she had to work at 11am, because her boss was in a car accident. Since Bridget was working, we decided to work on some astrology at the coffee shop Jane worked at.

We showed up at 1pm. No Jane. Her boss was even there. No car accident. When I had inquired about her, her boss told me that another girl called Jane earlier to have her come in for her. But, she wasn’t supposed to be until 5pm. Our study lesson was scheduled for 1pm. At 3:15pm, we left. The next day, I called Jane to tell her that I didn’t appreciate being lied to. That she didn’t have to come to the lesson. I just needed to know if she was going to be there or not. There was no need to lie. She tried to tell me that must have got it mixed up on the phone, that she really had to be there at 3pm. WRONG AGAIN. We were there until 3:15pm. And our lesson was schedule for noon.

That same week, she posted a blog about how her boyfriend (my ex) and her celebrated their 10-month anniversary. I did the calculations, and realized that they had started dating more than TWO weeks before he broke up with me. What a sleeze bag. And she knew we were dating that whole time…and she couldn’t tell me. Not even when we became best friends. Not even when it was all that I wanted. Not even when I asked.

And then she lied to me to miss our study lesson to hang out with him.

Girls do stupid things for boys…including lying to their High Priestess. So, she was kicked out of the coven. If you can’t trust the people you practice with, get rid of them. Don’t associate yourself with people who do not hold the same values as you. Even if it is your High Priest or Priestess that commits the bad acts of judgment. If you can’t love and trust your elders, get out of there.

One of my Wicca 2 students had once told me that he was working with a group of which he didn’t agree with their values. He had been with them for a few weeks, until he was told that he would have to sleep with one of the inner circle ladies in order to become initiated. All of these women were apparently property of the High Priest, and he would sometimes get very angry, threatening to kill people if they crossed him.

My first coven grew to be rather large, and they had the very difficult choice of asking someone to leave, because of her behavior towards her daughter, who was also a member of the coven.

In Wicca, we reveal our most vulnerable parts of ourselves to people. If we cannot trust that they are going to guard us as well try to guard them, then we cannot stand with these people.

Bridget and Saria talk about invited Jane when we get together, but I tell them to leave it be. She is excommunicated, if you ask me.

Labyrinth

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

The Labyrinth is an ancient symbol that combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a winding but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world. Labyrinths have long been used as meditation and mind working tools. A labyrinth is a means with which we can have a direct experience. We can walk it, whether in the physical or with our minds. It symbolizes life’s journey and creates a sacred space and place. Walking a labyrinth takes us on a trip to that which is within.

Labyrinths and mazes have often been confused. A labyrinth is not a maze, because it has only one path. It is unicursal. The way in is the way out. There are no dead ends. The path leads you on a spiraling circle path to the center and out again.

A labyrinth involves intuition, creativity, and imagery. With a maze many choices must be made and an active mind is needed to find the center. The only choice with a labyrinth is whether or not to enter, therefore a more passive, receptive frame of mind is needed. The choice is whether or not to walk a spiritual path, for once we take the first step, we cannot go back. Once we know, we cannot go back to not knowing.

I have added a picture of a labyrinth to our website. Please visit it, you can print it out, or leave in on the screen. Take your finger, start at the beginning, and trace the labyrinth to the center, and if you’d like…trace it back out again.

Self-Accountability

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

Currently, the only law in Wicca is that should you harm none, do what you will. This law makes us self-accountable. But not all of those who use magick hold themselves responsible for what they put out into the universe. Much of our actions rely on our moral values, our definitions of right and wrong, and their awareness of themselves and the world around them.

I was reading a pagan work of fiction the other day, and I began to think about magickal accountability. I asked myself what the world would be like if there was an institution of magickal accountability. Currently, our accountability in the everyday sense is put in the hands of the state, local, and federal governments. What would there be laws restricting if we let another body govern that which is magickal? How would our lives change?

Laws not only protect us, but they reflect the moral guidelines of a society. In the United States, it is illegal to possess or use marijuana or any other so called “hard-core” drugs. This reflects the tendency of our society to be more conservative. However, in Amsterdam, it is legal to go down to the local coffeeshop and smoke it in public. But, in both societies, there is a mix of moral views. Some people think it is okay to do drugs, and others think that smoking cigarettes should be outlawed.

Corresponding with someone over the past few weeks, I was enlightened as to the differences between east coast witches and west coast witches. On the west coast, witchy life is more intense, spells are big businesses…and if someone had a problem with you, they just might hex you and not think twice about it. However, on the east coast, it was observed that kind of outlook on magick wasn’t common, and that the Law is the Law – period.

If we modeled magickal law against the current laws of society, there would be many practices outlawed. Of course, harming or attempting to harm someone using magick would be illegal. Now, we could look at this at many levels. Using magick to kill someone is already against the law. Not only is it bad kharma, but murder is immoral and illegal no matter if you use magick or not. Hexes can be used to torment people…which is harassment…so that would become illegal as well. But what about projecting negative energy towards another person? Is this like hitting them in the face? Is it assault? Or is it like giving someone a dirty look or flipping them the bird?…which is completely on the legal side of the line. What if you got a ticket for expelling to much negative energy…even if you didn’t realize you were doing it?

There are always some out-of-date or silly laws hanging around. For example, in one city, it is against the law for pigeons to eat pebbles from a composite roof. In another city, it is illegal to water your lawn when it is raining. It would be interesting…as well as annoying…to see what kind of ridiculous laws got put into place regarding the practice of magick. For example, what if it was illegal to consecrate your tools under the new moon? Or what if you could be thrown in jail for sealing a circle with table salts?

Even though there are many laws that govern right and wrong, there are still people who would do things that are against these laws. Take drug dealers, money launderers, and people who travel at excessive speeds over the limit. Though a speeder and a drug dealer cannot be ethically compared, they are both still breaking the law. Just the same, there would be people who break magickal law. Some would still do things that the laws tell us we shouldn’t do. Some laws we can bend a little…like speeding…or the occasional hexing. But other laws would just be smashed to bits.

Let us say that there is some kind of Magickal Law Enforcement Agency. What could they really do? I mean, magick is an internal process. They cannot lock you up for wanting something bad to happen, but in reality, that’s magick. If a witch harms someone else, unless there is a confession, it would be really hard to get physical evidence that person is up to no good. Unless, their house is raided and the Magickal Enforcement Agents find enough evidence. I suppose that someone in your coven could turn you in for using table salts to seal a circle. REALISTICALLY, they could police magickal frauds and uncover fake spells. They could preside over the regulation of metaphysical services, such as divinatory readings, energy healings, and other holistic services. When you pay someone $20 – $100 to read something for you, the only guarantee that they are not a fake, and actually know what they are doing is how you feel about it at the end of the session. Granted, there are associations and certifications that people can obtain to give clients a sense of ease when it comes to some services.

However, laws and those who enforce these laws DO act as a deterrent to those who think twice about being bad. Now, I am not saying that we should have magickal law enforcement. I am just thinking out loud.

Fasting

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

When we enter sacred space, we perform some kind of task to cleanse our spirits…such as smudging with sage. Fasting is a practice that works to cleanse the bodies of the bad stuff we tend to put into it…this by elevating any blockage we might be inadvertently causing ourselves and our energy. From one to seven days prior to a ritual, be mindful of what you eat. Wicca does not require one to abstain from eating for a prolonged period of time. That is unhealthy and possibly dangerous.

The longer you fast, the more foods you will have to allow yourself. Fasting for three to seven days, you may choose to eat fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Drink lots of water. It is important to keep yourself hydrated. 8 – 8 ounce glasses of water a day at least. Fruit juices are good for nutrients and calories…but don’t let it take the place of water. However, no milk, no soda, no meat, no fried foods, nix the candy, no coffee, no nicotine, no alcohol. Soy or vegetable meat substitutes are acceptable…depending on how they are cooked. I would even say that soy milk is okay.

If I fast the day of a ritual, I will eat nothing until after the ritual. If I fast the day before, or even two days…I usually stick with fruits, vegetables, maybe some whole bread, and juice.

If you are fasting and you start to feel dizzy. Drink juice.

However, fasting is not a requirement of Wicca.

Life is Not All a Black and White Cookie

I teach to my students that it is unacceptable to become involved with magick that harms another or takes away a person’s free will. But some magick is not white, yet it is not black. It falls in between. I have three stories for you today, of when the choices we make fall into the gray area. I have only shared these stories with two other people. In many ways, I am ashamed. I keep them hidden. On this path, we need to seek awareness. I share these stories with the hope that you can learn something from them, as I have.

8 years ago, when I was in high school, a good friend of mine was engaged to a football player. Cassie was top of her class, good at playing the clarinet…an officer in the marching band even…and very active in drama club. She was also on the track team. She was a well-rounded individual. Overtime, she became involved with another member of the track team…Greg. This guy was a first class player. And I’m not talking sportsmanship. Not only was he known for his many sexual partners…but he probably was not clean. Why my friend was interested in him, I had no idea. “Hey Cassie…let’s not see this guy. You’re engaged…and Greg is dirty.” Maybe it was the bad boy image. Who knows.

So, logic and common sense haven’t worked. I told Greg to get lost, but that didn’t work either. I was kind of a shrimp in high school. Matt, a member of my study circle, and I decided to cast a binding spell, fearing that our friend had tumbled down a dark path that would only lead to the ruin of the life that she had worked so hard for.

Now, binding spells fall into that gray area. I teach my students that these kinds of spells are in the black end of the magickal spectrum. They typically seek to bind or stop a person from a certain action. This doesn’t fit into the white witch image. We don’t control other people. AND inexperienced we were. I hadn’t yet figured out the differences between black and white magick. I was under the impression that there was a clear line. Also…I did not understand at the time that each person faces challenges in his or her life, that these challenges must be met, and each individual has their own lessons to learn.

However, Matt and I were able to cast our spell in a way that limited the controlling aspect of the spell. With an apple, some mint, a skewer, and a piece of paper with our intent written onto it, we cast a spell that would bind Greg from hurting Cassie. Then, we buried it in my backyard and waited. As it decomposed, the magick would wield itself. Two days later, antsy about our first spell, Matt and I checked the yard. The place that we buried the skewered apple was completely covered with grass. Confused, we dug up the earth, but the apple was gone.

A few days later, I was disappointed when there was an away track meet, and Cassie seemed as if her and Greg were not letting up. Two weeks later, Greg was going steady with another girl, leaving Cassie with her fiancé. Interfering with Cassie and Greg may have set her up for the many other bad-boy types she would eventually run off with, her lesson unlearned.

My next story does not have an honorable outcome. When I was 17, I had been deep into magickal study and workings for months. I had also just moved in with my father. When I’d live with my dad, there were a couple of months where everything would be great between us. We’d go shopping, make dinner, and sit in the rockers on the porch…watching the sun go down. Then, out of no where my dad would get weird. He’d do silly parent things…like tell me I had a midnight curfew, then get mad when I showed up at 11:45pm…saying that I should have been home at 10pm. His logic was that even though my curfew was til midnight, I should be home at 10pm. My logic was that if he wanted me home at 10pm, then he should tell me that my curfew is 10pm. Then, I’d come home at 10pm.

I owned a car, and because of the trouble between him and my mom, he wouldn’t allow me to keep it with me while I lived with him. So, I had to use one of his cars while I lived there. It was not a problem, because he made a career change, preferring to drive a truck, and make cross-country runs. On one Friday evening, he was headed to Wisconsin from our home in Ohio. I called him to tell him that I had a coffee date, and that I was taking the car down the street for a few hours, but I’d be back early. He told me that I couldn’t. That I’d used the car too much that week for school and work. He told me that I should stay home for a change. I went ballistic. Yeah, I went to school…top 10 percent in my high school class…and I worked my butt off, but when I wanted one evening for myself, I wasn’t allowed to take the car.

I got so mad that I cast a spell that my dad would be away for a few days. I buried it in the yard. I took the car out anyway. I felt that I deserved a night for myself. The next day, my dad didn’t come home when he should have. I got a phone call from him later, telling me that he was in a hospital in Illinois. He couldn’t make the drive, because it turns out that he had an ulcer that gave him horrible stomach pains the night before. He didn’t know until that day that he had an ulcer. He also said that he’d be home in a few days. After the phone call, I immediately ran to the yard and dug up the spell that I had cast. It was gone.

The lesson from this experience…watch what you wish for. It just may come true. Spells can be tricky things. Though the spell that I cast was not a bad spell, it wielded bad results, unbeknownst to me. The outcome that I really wanted would have required a much more complicated spell.

This next magickal experience occurred not so long ago…a year and a half…maybe. I dated a guy who cheated on me with my friend Jane, hid his relationship with Jane from everyone for 7 months, cheated on Jane with me, and then pulled a one-night stand with my good friend Amy. Icing on the cake was what he did to one of the girls who was crazy about him for years. While I was dating him, he took the virginity of this girl, and then told her that they would be together. He knew that she was head over heels for him, and then he never called her.

This guy was a scumbag…and it all started when he cheated on me. He was a very nice guy for many years before that. Quiet, shy…I was his second ever girlfriend. I didn’t want him to hurt other people the way he had hurt us. However, at this time in my life, I had figured out the difference between black and white magick. But I didn’t care. I was so angry. He needed to know that we would be there watching and waiting. He needed to be taught a lesson. So, I spelled a clay coin that I made just for the occasion. I was going to give it to him with the promise that he wasn’t going to be able to get away with a clean conscious. That every girl he dated would do to him what he did to us. Times 4. This was good magick, right? I was helping other girls, wasn’t I?

I waited for him one night at the house of a mutual friend. It got late and I went home. The next day, I woke up. I realized that I was about to cast a spell on someone else and that this was not apart of my ethics. It was magick done for revenge, which is not good magick. I would take what was due back to me. Three times bad and three times good. Distraught, I folded the unused coin up into a black cloth and stashed it at the bottom of my altar chest, before I could dispose of it properly. Two weeks later, I went looking for it. I pulled out the cloth. No coin. I searched all through my altar. No coin. No one else knew about it. It too had disappeared.

Intense feelings can cloud judgment and lead to irrational actions. From these experiences, I have learned that spells are iffy creations. You do a spell for one thing, and you can get a completely unwanted result. I have also learned that you can’t take them back. I have grown aware that some of my intense feelings can lead to the desire to use magick. Bad idea. Magick requires a clear head, even if you want it to mend your heart or help ease your mind on the path.

I have had many, many other pleasant magickal experiences. These are just the stories of negative experiences existing in the grey area that I have learned from.

The Elements

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

An “element” in pagan philosophy is the various manifestations of a specific type of energies. Just as we broke the deity down into the God and the Goddess… we can further break these divine cosmic energies down into four parts. Almost everything can be associated with one or more of the four elements: Earth… Air… Fire… and Water.

The spirits… energies… or guardians of these four different elementals may be called forth during ritual to protect us and aid us in magick. The elements are representations of parts of our world… as well as parts of ourselves. Without the elements and what they represent… we would cease to feel emotions… to think… and to even exist.

Understanding what the elements are… remembering what they mean… and how they relate to us may be difficult at first. Studying and practicing ritual on a regular basis is the most effective way to master these relationships.

Earth is the element of stability… protection… fertility… soil… rocks… crystals… fruits… flowers… and the harvest. We look to the earth to ground us and to feed us. It is element of our bodies and everything that we do… make… and use. With the negative aspects of this energy is materialism… or placing an extreme focus on physical things. Materialism leads to the loss of focus in other areas of life… hindering advancement spiritually. It is associated with the direction of North… he colors green and brown… and the symbol of the pentacle.

Fire is the element of passion… human energy… the Sun… strength… health… enthusiasm. It represents candles… summer… noon… the lion… and the dragon. It is the driving force that moves the earth. It is the sexual energy that creates life. Fire is also in many ways associated with spirit and the breath of life. Negative aspects include anger… hate… selfishness… and the need of power. It is associated with the direction south… the colors red… orange… and gold… and the symbol of the wand.

Air is the breath of the goddess. It is communication… knowledge… understanding… and invisibility. Air embodies with the parts of ourselves that we cannot see: the mind… vision… dreams… and thoughts. It is the direction of dawn… the sunrise… and the element of Spring… birds… dragonflies… butterflies… incense… feathers… and the athame. Negative aspects of this element include bigotry… and too much of the self (such as being overly self-assured… self-pity… etc.). It is associated with the direction of east… the colors yellow… pink… and sky blue. A symbol of air is the sword.

Water is the symbol of our emotions and feelings… as well as our dreams and intuitions. It is linked with the moon… autumn… oceans… rivers… clouds… rain… storms… the gray twilight… water animals… seashells… and water-smoothed stones. Negative aspects of water are depression and infatuation. It is associated with the direction of west… the colors blue… sea green… and grey. It’s symbol is the chalice…the womb of the Goddess.

Spirit is considered to be the fifth element… though is it different in many respects. It is the glue that holds all of the other elements together. It is that divine cosmic energy… that flowing force within everything. Without spirit… the elements themselves would not be connected and there would be chaos. It is that which is in between. It is associated with the colors purple… white… and grey.
