The fall altar is set. If you wish, set up an altar of your own, but none is required. Yesterday, we gathered leaves, pine cones, and some cornstalks to add to our altar.
Altar or no altar, it is important to define your space. Make sure that you are in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. And make sure that there is plenty of room to move about. Also, be able to identify which ways are East, South, North, and West.
There are many ways that you can perform the following parts of this ritual. Because this podcast is for those who are not at an advanced level of study. This ritual was created so that no tools are necessary either. However, if you have tools you would like to use, or would like to alter the ritual to fit your traditions, feel free to do so.
Cleanse your space of any negative energy that may be lingering. To cleanse the space that will become your sacred space…close your eyes and visualize that all of the negativity is flowing out of the space…the room even. Associate a color with negative energy…such as black. Imagine that all of the negativity in your space is a suffocating black gas. Push this gas out of your space. Watch is seep away. As you remove the black gas, you become more able to breathe. The air feels lighter.
It is important to cleanse your space of negative energy, because it becomes the gunk that inhibits positive energy from moving about freely. The less positive energy can move, the weaker the web that you weave will be.
What you are left is with an empty space. Even though you have eradicated it of negative energy, it is always a good measure to fill it with positive energy. With your eyes still closed, pull positive energy into the circle. Associate a color with positive energy, such as white. Imagine that a light, white gas is filling the space, uplifting your spirit. This gas is the essence of happiness. Smile as it surrounds you, filling your spirit with good things.
CASTING THE CIRCLE, will turn your private space into a sacred space in between the physical and spiritual worlds…in between the conscious and the unconscious. Going to this in between place allows to you directly communicate with the divine cosmic energy of the universe. This energy runs through all things, even you. Magick is the movement of energy in order to obtain a desired result. Putting ourselves in direct contact with this energy allows us to perform more effective magick.
Know where the boundary of your circle is. You want to be able to move to your workspace and all of your tools. To cast a circle, take hand and point it to the edge of your circle. Starting at the east, Walk around the circle clockwise three times. While walking and pointing, visualize the division between your space and the rest of the room. Imagine that bricks are flying up and solidifying your sacred space.
The elements represent different parts of the divine cosmic energy. Earth (physical), Air (mental), Fire (spiritual), and Water (emotional). These also correspond with the four parts of our mind. Wiccans call these energies to our circle to protect and aid them during rituals. Each of the elements correlates to a cardinal direction (air-east, fire-south, water-west, earth-north). We call these Quarters
When you call the quarters, remember to VISUALIZE the energy rushing into the circle.
Face the east. Extend your arm upward and outward, and your hand pointed.
Elementals of the East, Powers of Air!
With the beginning of fall
We feel the air become crisp and cool
And hear the cries of the birds traveling south
Protect and guide us
Though the harvest season
Hail and Welcome!
Imagine that a light, fresh breeze is rushing into your circle.
Face the south:
Elementals of the South, Powers of Fire!
With the beginning of fall
The days become shorter
And we light the fires
Protect and guide us
Though the harvest season
Hail and Welcome!
Visualize the boundaries of the circle as dancing flames.
Face the west:
Elementals of the West, Powers of Water!
With the beginning of fall
It is a time for friends and family
And the sky paints the harvest moon
Protect and guide us
Though the harvest season
Hail and Welcome!
Visualize water flowing into the circle, licking at your feet.
Face the north:
Elementals of the North, Powers of Earth!
With the beginning of fall
We see the trees turn into dusty rainbows
And all creatures prepare for the coming winter
Protect and guide us
Though the harvest season
Hail and Welcome!
Visualize the ground around the circle rising up, and that mountains now stand just beyond the border of your circle.
Mabon is the beginning of fall. To celebrate this seasonal change, I have a reading of the Greek story of the seasons. This part of the ritual requires some verbal participation. When I say “So mote it be.” Everyone repeat with me. “So mote it be.” I will do it the first time with you.
High Priestess: “We stand on the Wheel of Life knowing that the journey only begins when we take our first step. We rejoice in the fall, because we will stay warm in the care of the Earth Mother throughout the changing season.”
East: “The days grow shorter and we feel the cold upon us. Winter is near. So mote it be.”
All: “So mote it be!”
South: “I am Hades, Lord of the Underworld. I have claimed Persephone for my bride. She will come with me to my palace below,And stay with me forevermore.
West: “I am Persephone, daughter of Demeter. Captured I may be, but I will not stay for eternity. Someone will rescue me.”
North: “I am Demeter, the Earth Mother. I have been so sicken with grief, that I have left the world unattended. The crops and cattle are dying. All life looks as bare as I feel inside.”
East: “Fear not. New fruits are born from new seeds carried on a winter wind. So mote it be.”
All: “So mote it be!”
North: “The wrath of the Gods will be upon Hades if my daughter is not returned!”
West: “I will be safe, but I fear that I have eaten the seed of a pomegranate in my state of hunger.”
South: “So Persephone will return to the earth, but for half of the year, she will remain with me.”
North: “And each time my daughter descends into the Underworld, I grow sorrowful. The land which I tend reflects the pain I feel. When she returns, my joy shows in the abundance of the land.”
East: “So become the seasons. In the fall, Persephone joins Hades and Demeter makes the world bare for the winter. In the spring, she returns to her mother, and the earth flourishes. So mote it be.”
All: “So mote it be!”
To dismiss the circle, we could say goodbye to the elementals, but I think today we will break into song. Sing with me. We will repeat the song 3 times to release the circle.
If you don’t like to sing, Start with the North, and then West, and South, to East…which is backwards from the way we called them…and go thank each of the elements.
BY THE EARTH
By the Earth that is Her body
By the Air that is Her breath
By the Fire that is Her bright spirit
By the living Waters of her womb
May the peace of the Goddess
Be forever in your heart
The circle is open but unbroken
Merry Meet and Merry Part
