According to the 2007 Farmer’s Almanac, a good fertilizer and cat repellent for plants is Maxwell House Coffee. Maxwell House Coffee grounds are full of nutrients that plants love. Instead of throwing out the used coffee grounds after you make a pot of coffee, give them to both your inside and outside plants. Just work the grounds into the soil. If you’re relly ambitious, you can also use Maxwell House coffee grounds to fertilize your entire lawn. Fertilizing plants with coffee repels cats, and prevents them from digging up the soil. Build a ring of coffee grounds around the areas you would like to protect from ants. It’s said they will not cross the ring.

Friday, October 20th, 2006Goodluck Herb Jar
Tuesday, October 17th, 2006I would like to share with you a spell for a good luck herb jar that came from one of my Myspace friends.
To attract good fortune into youe life or change a streak of bad luck to good, put any combination of the following magical herbs in a small jar: Buckthorn bark, Chamomile, Clover, Dandelion, Frankincence, Valerian, Honeysuckle, Huckleberry leaves, Irish moss, Job’s tears, Lotus, Lucky hand root, Mistletoe, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Rosehips, Rosemary, Sandlewood, Spearmint, Star anise, Thyme. Seal your jar tightly and keep in your kitchen on a shelf or a windowsill. Place your hands upon the jar each morning upon rising, and say: ” To God and Goddess i do say, Guide me through another day. Let good fortune come my way, Good luck hither now i say.” After reciting the magical incantation, Gently shake the jar a few times and then kiss the jar before putting it back. Use the same jar for a maximum of 13 days, then return the herbs to the earth by buring them and repeat if necessary.
For all of us who think it silly or feel like an idiot for kissing a jar…..you must kiss the jar. It’s kind of like kissing the dice before you throw them.
Valerian
Friday, October 13th, 2006If it looks like a root, and it doesn’t smell very pleasant, then it is probably valerian. It’s magickal properties are love, sleep, purification, and protection. Some common uses of Valerian include in protection sachets and under pillows to help aid sleep. Known in the herbal world as ALL-HEAL, it is recommended for nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, and headache. It is also used for all kinds of cramps, including intestinal, muscular, and menstral.
When taking Valerian internally, it is best to stick with a very small amount until you are sure how it will affect you. With some people, it causes instant sleep, so especially do not drive or do anything else where you have to FOCUS until you are sure its effects.
Though cats may like the smell of Valerian…we typically don’t. If you make a tea of it, sweeten it with honey or sugar. A lot of honey or sugar. For an easy fix, try Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime EXTRA tea…which mixes valerian with Spearmint leaves, lemon grass,
Sage
Wednesday, September 27th, 2006With whorls of violet-blue flowers, you can find sage growing on the hillside and on grasslands in warm regions. The leaves are grey and wooly when it is young. An ancient herb, sage leaves are often used as a seasoning for meat or fish, and can be drank as a tea or used in tinctures and infusions.
A 2003 study sited that sage may help boost memory. Scientists at the Universities of Newcastle and Northumbria tested 44 people, who were either given the herb or a placebo. They found that those given the sage oil tablets performed much better in a “word recall test”. Experts believe the active ingredient may boost levels of a chemical that helps transmit messages in the brain. It is thought that sage may help those with Alzheimer’s, because suffers have a diminished quantity of the same chemical that researches found sage boosted.
Sage has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. Sage has been used to increase circulation, to relieve menopausal problems, in mouthwashes or toothpastes, and in gargles for laryngitis or tonsillitis.
It is often used for cleansing during magickal practices, and as an essential oil.
Most metaphysical stores carry sage. You can even find it at some tea shops. I am currently working on trying to find a good herbal store from which to purchase herbs for our students. I have a couple of leads. I won’t just buy and sell anyone’s herbs. Who knows where it came from and how long its been sitting around. But, when I find something good, I will let you know. Until then, Bridget, Saria, and I have put together some items for our students, but I have no problem if you want to pop by and check them out. Just head over to our website and click on ACADEMY STORE. It’s in the works, but things are collecting.
