The Dangers of Witchcraft

Monday, January 21st, 2008

While Wicca teaches the use of magick to enact a positive change, there are still dangers to beware. If you google “dangers of witchcraft”, you will be bombarded with materials written by non-practicing individuals with a religiously conservative message. Some of them even cite Harry Potter as some sort of example or proof of their claims. While spouting off devil danger might be very real to them, for those who practice the Craft, we have different concerns.

Continuous practice may lead to the realization of some of these items. Others are common sense. Some you may never have to deal with. In a discussion in the Mystical Forest, an advanced forum for students who have completed Wicca 2, we took up this topic for discussion. I present you some of the dangers that we discussed. There are 21 of them, so I will post them one at a time. While exploring these items, be thinking about their relevance, experiences you have personally had with them, as well as what you have witnessed with other people, why some of these issues arise, and how to deal with them when they do. We will begin in just a moment.

1. In some countries or cultures, there are social ramifications for practicing witchcraft. While in many countries, residents can go about their religion and personal practice as they see fit, others are not so fortunate. More than a few students have commented that they are practicing in secret, that they are taking online classes, because if exposed in their town, it could provoke an unwanted response. To others, their family and friends may have adverse reactions to the truth.

2. Many aspects of witchcraft are too complicated for children and possibly younger teens to deal with. The Craft takes will power, emotional, physical, and mental stability, as well as maturity. While we would give a young person a gun that shoots bubbles, we would not give them a gun that shoots bullets.

3. Fad experimentation could lead to one accidentally stumbling into risky situations. When some people choose to rebel against social norms, witchcraft can be appealing. When I was in high school, I hung with a group of social rebels. When I decided to study Wicca, the whole group did, too. Some of us took up serious study, and others experimented with topics beyond their ability. I have also encountered several people who study a bit here and there with great personal gains in mind. Those who practice the Craft based on their desperation to complete a task, such as to cast spells to force an ex-lover to come back. Some look for power, and may even seek to mimic tales of witches, wizards, and warlocks, and supernatural adventures. Getting oneself into complicated situations is always way easier than getting out of them.

4. Working in the realm of the Spirit, with spirits and other entities, as well as with energy can increase the spirit activity around a person, or one’s awareness of spirit activity. Once a door is opened, it is difficult to close it, and some people may be spooked or uncomfortable with these types of experiences.

5. If one does not know how to properly ground, or has difficulty grounding, this could result in an “energy hangover”, in which an excess of energy causes headaches, body aches, and other similar symptoms. Some practitioners can become addicted to the “energy buzz” of working with magick.

6. Difficulty around electronic equipment. For example, common is the static shock from clothes and skin becoming eclectically charged.

7. Some new or increased allergies or sensitivities may occur. These are not to be confused with normal sensitivities that occur as a person’s body changes with age. For example, with age, I have become mildly sensitive to some detergents, cilantro, and lactose. However, once I began to practice witchcraft, I developed sensitivity to most metal that I attribute to my involvement in the Craft. If it is not sterling silver or platinum, I have trouble keeping earring in my ears or rings on my fingers without swelling.

8. An wave of unexpected depression that can come every now and then.

9. Elemental issues. I have a tendency to get burned when I am angry. Also, when I am not grounded, I trip on everything. Everything. I lose the ability to automatically sense the distance between objects.

10. There are several physical hazards to be wary of during ritual. One could become disoriented during trance work/aspecting, knocking over lit candles, tripping on things, or cutting oneself.

11. Traveling on such a path can cause physical/mental illnesses to crop up or come back. The spiritual experience requires a great stability in all facets of life. It is best to make sure that one is stable in their mental, physical, and emotional selves before continuing on one’s path, even in practicing witchcraft.

12. Drug abuse can result if a person cannot cope with such a drastic fluctuation in energy, and then this translates to an instability that is pacified with a psychotropic substance.

13. The high energy and personal closeness of a coven can become a sexual concern. For example, a person may develop an attraction to another in the circle because of the sensual, attractive power of magick, even if the individual is in a committed relationship outside.

14. One can stumble in to financial stress as a result of a tool addiction. Folks who become obsessed with obtaining tools, books, memberships, and classes may put themselves into financial trouble trying to acquire these things. The Craft requires no tools to practice, and there are always alternatives for each person to fit practice into their own lifestyle. I have seen people get carried away.

15. The after shock of initiation (or even dedication in some cases) can be overwhelming.

16. One concern for some people is an addiction to divination, or an over-reliance on divination to make life choices. While divination is a form of communication with the divine, it can only guide our choices. It cannot make the choices for us. I have had a couple of people write to me with concerns about divination experiences. One lady kept visiting self-proclaimed psychics, who would do readings for her, and tell her that she could have what she wanted if she paid several hundred dollars for spells and potions. She never paid them, but she always took their word on her fate, and made major life decisions based on it. I have stopped astrologically over-analyzing the men that I date. It’s sort of weird when a girl asks a guy in what city and what time he was born on the first date. After a couple of times, I realized I was a little over-reliant.

17. Over-reliance on spell work for even the most mundane tasks.

18. Paranoia, or the fear that one is being hexed or cursed, when there are no signs.

19. An over-reliance on coven mates. Since, covens are essentially family, some people can take took many liberties. One of our coven mates leaned on the group for help doing many tasks. One of my last encounters with this person was when our whole coven and our actual family members came over to help him move out in 2 days. We were told everything would be packed and a dolly built, but nothing was done, and our friend was sleeping when we arrived, and it took us awhile to wake him. Needless to say, we not only moved him, but packed him, and cleaned the place, too.

20. People change. One of the fundamental goals on this path is a deeper personal exploration and understanding.

21. Increase in an underlying empathic ability. For some people, the ability to sense the moods and feelings of other living things can open up to the point of suffocation before they get it under control.

Meat From the Descendents of Clones

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Federal scientists have concluded that there is no difference between food from cloned animals and food from conventional livestock. This sets the stage for the government to declare that cloned animals are safe for the human food supply. The Food and Drug Administration planned to brief industry groups in advance of an announcement at the end of December. The agency indicated it would approve cloned livestock in a scientific journal article published online early last month.

The agency “concludes that meat and milk from clones and their off spring is as safe to eat as corresponding products derived from animals produced using contemporary agricultural practices,”

Also, the FDA believes that no special labels are needed for food from clones or their offspring. Consumer groups say labels are a must, because surveys have shown people to be uncomfortable with the idea of cloned livestock.

“Consumers are going to be having a product that has potential safety issues and has a whole load of ethical issues tied to it, without any labeling,” said Joseph Mendelson, legal director of the Center for Food Safety.

Carol Tucker Foreman, director of food policy at the Consumer Federation of America, said the FDA is ignoring research that shows cloning results in more deaths and deformed animals than other reproductive technologies.

The consumer federation will ask food companies and supermarkets to refuse to sell food from clones.

Aromatherapy

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Aromatherapy has been around for a long time. I would venture a guess that it goes back farther than Jesus. In fact, the art of using the power of scent to treat the body goes back as far as 4500 BCE to the Egyptians.

The brunt of the practice of aromatherapy lies with essential plant oils. These essential oils are extracted a variety of different ways, depending on the plant or user preference, from steamed distillation and expression to maceration.

When you are buying essential oils, it is necessary to separate the real ones from the fake ones. First, all real essential oils com in dark bottles. You will find the plants English name, the plants Latin name, as well as how the essential oil was obtained (whether through distillation, expression, or other). There are many reputable essential oil retailers. Stick to the 4 requirements: dark bottle, Name, Latin name, and how it’s made; and it should be easy to spot the good ones.

Essential oils should never be placed directly on the skin. They are too potent. Carrier oils, such as grapeseed, almond, and jojoba (ho-HO-ba), are necessary to dilute pure essential oils. If you intend to apply an oil to the skin, dilute it, and test it by applying a small amount to a patch of skin. Since they are very potent, only a few drops are necessary for most ways that you use them.

Some oils pack more of a punch than others. Each essential oil is givin a rating called a “note” that tells its strength. An oil is either top, middle or base note. Top note oils are the strongest, but they also tend not to last as long as lower notes. Base note oils not as potent, but they tend to last the longest.

The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) has a 10 ten list of essential oils. What this indicates is that if you were going to build a natural first aid kit of oils, this is where to start.

Clary Sage Natural pain killer, helpful in treating muscular aches and pains. Very relaxing, and can help with insomnia. Also very helpful in balancing hormones.Mid-

Lavender Relaxing, and also useful in treating wounds, burns, and skin care.mid.

Lemon Top, Very uplifting, yet relaxing. Helpful in treating wounds, infections, and house cleaning and deodorizing.

Peppermint Useful in treating headaches, muscle aches, digestive disorders such as slow digestion, indigestion, and flatulence.Top Note

Rosemary Very stimulating and uplifting, good to help mental stimulation as well as to stimulate the immune system. Very good for muscle aches and tension. Stimulating to the digestive system, as well as memory recall. Top Note

Tea Tree
Ylang Ylang
Eucalyptus

Geranium
Roman Chamomile

There are many ways to incorporate essential oils into everyday life.

Burn some essential oil in a oil burner.
Put a few drops in your mop water or in your clothes iron.
Drop some in the bath water.
With a carrier oil, use an essential oil to massage
Putting a couple of drops on a cloth, and then placing it on your face.
Make sachets of herbs and oils and place them in your desk or around home.
Drop a few drops into the melting wax of an unscented burning candle
Put some essential oil in a water spray bottle to make a quick air freshner.

ESSENTIAL OILS CAN ALSO
To improve respiratory function
To increase circulation
To improve digestion
Help with painful moontimes
Reduce memory loss

Essentials oils can improve mental health, energize the body, and increase life balance. There are many ways to use them. For more ideas and tips, there is a link to the NAHA website on ours. Go to fireflyacademy.org and click on PODCAST.

Pomegranate

Friday, September 29th, 2006

From appearances in the Bible…to the story of Persephone in Greek Mythology…to its modern day allegorical presence in some pagan rites and Greek orthodox weddings, the pomegranate is a powerful symbol.
The pomegranate is a fruit-bearing small tree. It is believed to have originated in eastern Iran and eastward, but its true native range is not accurately known. The fruit is between an orange and a grapefruit in size, and has thick reddish skin and many seeds. The edible parts are the seeds and the brilliant red seed pulp surrounding them.

Pomegranate juice is a popular drink in the Middle East, and is also used in Iranian and Indian cuisine; it began to be widely marketed in the US in 2004. Pomegranate concentrate is used in Syrian cuisine. Grenadine syrup is thickened and sweetened pomegranate juice; it is used in cocktail mixing. Before the tomato arrived in the Middle East, grenadine was widely used in many Persian foods; it can still be found in traditional recipes. The juice can also be used as an antiseptic when applied to cuts.

One pomegranate delivers 40% of an adult’s daily vitamin C requirement. It is also a rich source of folic acid and of antioxidants. Pomegranates are high in polyphenols.

Sited in Wikipedia.org…several human clinical trials indicated that the juice of the pomegranate is effective in reducing several heart risk factors. According to Pubmed.gov…pomegranate has been shown to reduce systolic blood pressure. And researchers at University of Wisconsin Medical School, say that Pomegranate juice is effective against certain cancers such as prostate cancer.

Sometime over a year ago, I ran across a brand of pomegranate juice in the grocery store. POM Wonderful is a highly concentrated form of pomegranate juice. There are several different flavors that they mix with pomegranate…such as blueberry or mango. But, if you want pomegranate juice straight up, you can get that, too. It is a little pricey…running about $4 for about 20 ounces…but I feel like it’s fighting cancer as soon as I take a sip. Yesterday, I was at the store, and found a POM tea that mixes green, black, or white tea with pomegranate juice, and another fruit flavor. These teas are a little less costly, but very good. They are lighter in flavor, so if the regular POM is too much for you, definitely look for the POM tea.

Yoga

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Yoga is like Wicca these days. There are so many types and the practice is often left up to the discretion of the instructor. To me, Yoga is a method of achieving balance, awareness, focus, and strength.

Some of the different paths of Yoga include… Mantra Yoga…chanting, singing, and finding the divine through the sound OM. Raja Yoga is the mastery of the mind and senses through meditation. Yantra Yoga uses the vibration of form. Tantra Yoga is union through ritual. Karma Yoga is the path of action and service. Hatha Yoga is the path of physical mastery.

As with many other fitness practices, Hatha yoga has its own set of moves, positions…what yoga calls POSES or asanas. Whether standing, sitting, kneeling, or bending…learning and practicing these asanas will improve one’s overall well-being. Not only balance, focus, and breathing…but this type of yoga works on flexibility, support, and muscle function as well.

There are approximately 80 poses…From STANDING MOUTAIN (Tadasana), and HALF MOON (Chandrasana), to CHILD’S POSE (Balasana), the name of each pose is in Sanskrit, but it’s English name is an interpretation of the physical position of each. In Standing Mountain, you are standing up straight and tall, while in child’s pose, you are curled up and protected like a child.

Hatha Yoga uses these poses mixed with breathing to integrate the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga systematically stretches and strengthens muscles throughout the body, increases circulation to internal organs and glands, quiets the nervous system, and improves concentration. This ancient system of self-care brings vitality, health, deep relaxation, and peace of mind.

My yoga instructor today made the comment that what initially drew her to study was the fact that yoga lacks competitiveness. Whatever level of balance, flexibility, and strength you have, yoga starts you at your level and works up from there. Each time, you get a little better and you can move a little farther. It will never matter how far you can go, just that you #1 – go…and #2 – move just a little farther than you started out.

For several months now, I have been looking for a yoga class close to where I live. I have studied yoga on and off for seven years. I enrolled in a yoga course when I was 16 and I will never forget my teacher. Roberta Holliday. She was a little old lady, nearing 70…but I tell you, she had more energy and drive than almost any other woman I have met. Bobbie attributed her health to yoga. She started out teaching Yoga in her thirties and it just stuck with her. And I stuck with her through her advanced class.

One of the unique aspects of her yoga classes was her fixation on affirmations.

I am grounded. I am still. I am at peace. I have control over my life. I trust. I am in good health. I am in harmony with the world. I create and joyously receive abundance in all aspects of my life. I claim and celebrate my life. These are words from Bobbie’s A Course on Yoga and Metaphysics.

She encouraged us to think of affirmations during our poses, to say them in the mirror when we wake up, and some of our assignments included writing affirmations.

I’ve been around when it come to yoga classes. My high priestess was teaching yoga at the church where she also taught music. So, my mom and I joined her there every week.

Then, there were the advanced classes that I took at Bowling Green State. The instructor there really stretched us out. We did a lot of poses that required partners to hold and increase the stretch. Yoga for me is an individual experience, and some times, I just want to be on my own with my asanas. However, I did learn a neat trick from one of the girls that I partnered with. Most instructors teach you to increase the stretch and to energize your muscles with each exhale. Well, she had figured out on her own that by exhaling differently, she more effectively energized her body. Listen.

Some of my female friends were interested in yoga, but didn’t want to join a class, so a few times a week, we would get together in one of the empty gyms in the rec center, and work through the sun salutation. They really loved the sun salutation. Granted, I am not a certified teacher.

The sun salutation is a progression or cycle of poses. From Standing Mountain, to a back bend, a forward bend, into a lunge, then plank takes you onto the floor and pushing your upper body back into cobra, sticking your butt in the air for down dog…then back into a lunge, to forward bend, reaching up with your hands over your head into a back bend, and then coming back to a resting place at Standing Mountain. Okay, so some of that might be gibberish to you…but hopefully you get the idea.

Most Yoga classes work with this sequence at one point or another. There are also many variations of this sequence. Yoga always starts at your level and then keeps moving you along a little further.

I was taking yoga at Bally’s Fitness when I moved far, far away. I was so happy when the closest Bally’s to my new home had yoga classes. The instructor was fantastic and I quickly fell in love with her style. She was deep into hatha yoga. I decided that I was going to every class that she had. So, one Monday I show up, and there was a different instructor. We spent an hour and a half doing the sun salutation over and over and over again. She kept wanting us to go faster and faster. I was horrified. Yoga as aerobic exercise? I scoffed and almost walked out. She was not allowing us time to balance, time to breathe properly, or time to correctly align ourselves. That was the first time I realized that not all teachers teach hatha yoga or even understand the purpose of it.

We moved again, and it was too far to commute, so I stopped taking classes at Bally’s. I dropped in a few times at a yoga studio 7 minutes from my house. Now, typically, the only place you can get to in 7 minutes in the D.C. metro area is the next stoplight. So, this place was close. It had been a few months since I practiced yoga, but I just wasn’t getting it in this class. I convinced myself that I was getting old and overworked. My balance was off, I didn’t know where to put my feet. I felt like I was relearning the poses. Then, on my 3rd class, the instructor talked about YogaFit, and how it is different from traditional yoga. YogaFit has changed the poses, so that they are more about strengthening the body, as well as more physically safe during strengthening. That was it. I was actually having to relearn the poses. That was at the end of June. I knew it couldn’t be hatha yoga. I was defrauded.

And here we are. I have found a good home at this yoga studio a couple of towns over. Breathing and balance, here we come!

Reiki

Monday, September 11th, 2006

According to the International Center for Reiki Training…Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us all. If one’s “life force energy” is low… then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress… and if it is high… we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki treats the whole person including the physical body… emotions… mind and spirit. This creates many beneficial effects…including relaxation…feelings of peace…security…and wellbeing.

Reiki is an easy…natural…and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. An amazingly simple technique to learn… the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense… but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during what’s refered to as an attunement given by a Reiki master. An attunement is a type of Reiki initiation that allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life. Its use is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

In a Reiki session… the practitioner asks the recipient to lie down and relax. The practitioner then is said to act as a channel for Reiki energy… theoretically allowing life force energy to be channeled through the practitioner to wherever the patient is thought to require it. Usually the practitioner moves their hands close to or on various parts of the recipient’s body. Some patients report feeling various sensations…such as heat… tingling… cold… pressure… etc. Practitioners of Reiki attribute these sensations to life force energy filling energetic deficiencies in the body and aura of the recipient… repairing and opening their energy channels… pulling out negativity… and dissolving the blockages of stale energy.

According to the teachings of Reiki…we are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called charkas. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force energy nourishes the organs and cells of the body… supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted… it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept… either consciously or unconsciously… negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing… Reiki clears… straightens and heals the energy pathways… thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

Reiki is controversial because many suggest that there is no scientific evidence it works the way it says it does. That instead…results may be achieved through suggestion or the placebo effect.
Reiki does not go by any religion… and its healing techniques fit in very well with the Wiccan paradigm. As a result of its working with the life force energy… I feel that it would be a helpful technique to learn in order to aid one’s practice magick. Magick deals with the movement of energy and this spiritual energy that connects all things.

I am about to register for a Reiki course for November. I am very excited… because I have wanted to do so for many years. Two of my circle sisters had taken Reiki 1 and 2 courses a long time ago…and highly recommended it. These courses can be costly…running from $150 to $500…depending on the teacher and the level of attunement involved. I am definitely interested in seeing what it is all about.
